VIKASANA - IIM B SOCIAL CLUB

Vikasana Social Club in IIM Bangalore and Mangalore
VIKASANA, the social service club in the campus of IIM Bangalore started by the IIM B students in the year (1990) when most of the 90s kids started coming to an earth. The idea got blossomed after seeing the sons and daughters of construction workers being deprived of education on campus.  The functioning of the club initiated by providing education to those children by the students of IIM-B.  With the completion of 28 years,  One idea transformed the Vikasana club by successfully providing the different services like Blood Donation Camp; Sponsor for Child's education, inspiring women to take up entrepreneurship; sponsoring books in local government schools; working on solving real-life problems faced by NGOs; teaching underprivileged children; scholarship program for meritorious kids to realize the dream of quality education;  donation of clothes who are in dire need, One Day at IIM B, raising funds from conducting Marathon and Alumni donations.

Vikasana club connects the gathering of like-minded people to work for the betterment of underprivileged sections in our society to provide quality education, health, sanitation, employment opportunities, entrepreneurship.  It taught the values of Compassion, Empathy, Generosity, Benevolence, Social responsibility, Humanity, Human heartedness, Organisational ability, Teamwork and most importantly being a reason for someone's smile.

Personal Experience of IIM B students from VIKASANA

BHUVANA JAGAN speaks "I have always thought personally helping out people is all there is to social work. Every member in Vikasana would have experienced the feeling of being completely satisfied when we help someone. That's probably why we even joined Vikasana. But the difference is, in Vikasana, field work is very less. It's a different experience altogether, from the conventional ones we've had before. We work behind the scenes, we rarely get the opportunity to face the people we're helping, we work more towards sensitizing the population towards social work, we try and find new ways to incorporate what we learn to help people. From sitting down with a kid to teach him/her, we reached the time when we create websites and events for fundraising so that these kids can afford school education. We learned the sustainable method of working for good causes. Vikasana has been a learning experience of how to use our competencies to do good".

MANI SHANKAR PARAMESWARAN speaks  "I used to teach English and Mathematics for the 4th standard boy every week for one hour.  We gradually forged a friendship over the past year.  Now, I'm passed out of college. Recently I visited the campus last week with a friend of mine. The place was not the same anymore as none of my friends wasn't there and am desperate to talk to anyone in the college. Out of nowhere, the same 4th standard kid had come to campus that day and we have a nice heartwarming chat. He made me the day so special and it was a wonderful day fulfilled my heart.  Thank you Vikasana for the experience you have given ".

"Make a difference at your College life"

Just with two years,  IIM B graduates making a positive social impact in the society through Vikasana Club.  The students who are pursuing Arts, Science, Engineering, Medicines have enough time to make a sustainable social impact on society.  Take a leadership role; create a social club like Vikasana club at your respective colleges; join hands with like-minded people; target an area; help the poor needy children deprived of education, scoring above 1100 scores but struggle to join colleges due to their social and economic conditions.  Help them!  Raise them!

To be honest saying, every human has helping tendency and generosity somewhere in the heart.  It is our responsibility to raise the feeling.  You must realize what happened in the Chennai Floods 2015 and Kerala Floods 2018.  Everybody showed their tons of selflessness to others through different means.  Vel Arumugam, a human from Erode purchased 1000 blankets and travelled to Chennai to help the needy.  Santhosh, one man and other volunteers continuously cooking for 90 hours who helped feed 1,70,000 people, people offering shelters for strangers, fisherman bow down on his knees to help women and children climb NDRF boat during Kerala Flood and Anupriya, small girl from Tamil Nadu who donate the entire money saved for buying bicycle to Kerala relief fund.

"Everybody can be great because everybody can serve"  - Martin Luther King
To my young generation of students and college goers,  don't wait for disasters to show your humanity.  Show your selflessness and humanity right now to change the world which you want to see.  It's simple by creating clubs like Vikasana in your college, work with your friends and utilize time at your college in a productive manner.  Once you completed the college,  these memories and smile from the people you helped will be everlasting in your memories.
